Prices across providers range from about $1 to $10 per user per month, but advertised prices are hard to compare. Some require a year up front, some have minimum user counts, and several of the lowest prices belong to plans that don’t let you use your own domain or connect Outlook, Apple Mail or Thunderbird.

Key Findings
Lowest price per user: Zoho Mail Lite at $1 per user per month and Runbox Micro at €1.66 are the cheapest plans with your own domain and IMAP access. Both require paying for at least a year up front.
Lowest price with true monthly billing: Greatmail starts at $1.95 per mailbox per month with no annual commitment, though plans start at five mailboxes ($9.75/month). For a single user paying monthly, Mailbox.org’s personal Standard plan (€4) and Fastmail Standard ($6) are the options.
Watch for fixed fees: Mailbox.org business accounts require a service package from €25 per month on top of mailbox fees, so five business mailboxes cost €30 per month, about €6 per user. Its low per-user prices make more sense for larger teams, where the fixed fee is spread further.
A different pricing model: Migadu charges per account rather than per user, with unlimited mailboxes and a shared daily message allowance. Check the entry plan before you compare: Several low advertised prices belong to plans that won’t do what most businesses need. Fastmail Basic doesn’t support your own domain or third-party email apps, Mailbox.org Light supports your own domain only in family accounts, and the free plans from Zoho and Proton don’t include IMAP access.
Is there free IMAP email hosting?
Not for your own domain among these providers. Zoho’s free plan covers up to five users on one domain in some regions, but excludes IMAP, POP and ActiveSync. Proton’s free plan doesn’t support your own domain, and its Bridge app for IMAP access requires a paid plan. Migadu replaced its free plan with the $19/year Micro plan. Most providers offer a free trial instead, typically 14 to 30 days.
The Best IMAP Email Hosting for Your Situation
Every provider here does something well. The right choice depends on who will use the email and how.
- Personal IMAP email hosting (one person): Mailbox.org Standard and Fastmail Standard both offer monthly billing for a single user. If you’re happy to pay yearly, Migadu Micro ($19/year) and Runbox Micro (€19.95/year) cost the least.
- Small business teams: Greatmail’s per-mailbox pricing with monthly billing suits teams of five or more, and its sending limits grow with each mailbox you add. Zoho Mail Lite is cheaper if you’ll commit to a year.
- Many addresses, few senders: Migadu’s flat-rate model is hard to beat for agencies hosting client domains, families, and anyone with lots of addresses but modest traffic.
- Privacy and European data location: Proton Mail leads on encryption. Mailbox.org (Germany), Runbox (Norway) and Migadu (Swiss company, EU data centers) keep data in Europe.
- Shared calendars and contacts: Fastmail, Mailbox.org and Proton include them, and Greatmail’s Groupware Edition adds CalDAV, CardDAV and ActiveSync.

Storage: Entry plans range from 2 GB (Runbox Micro) to 50 GB (Fastmail Standard). Check how storage is allocated, too. Most providers set a quota per mailbox, while Migadu and Greatmail can share storage across an account or plan.
Sending limits: Every provider limits outgoing mail to prevent spam. What differs is whether the limit applies per mailbox, so capacity grows as you add users, or across the whole account, as at Migadu and Runbox.
