Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) Authentication Settings Can't Post

To send messages in Microsoft Outlook Express, you should configure SMTP authentication using the same settings as your incoming mail server:
  1. Open Outlook Express.
  2. Select Tools/Accounts.
  3. Click on the Mail tab, highlight your account and click on the Properties button.
  4. Click on the Servers tab.
  5. In the Outgoing Mail Server section, select the checkbox My server requires authentication.
  6. Click on the Settings button.
  7. Select the option Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Click on the Apply button and then click OK.
  10. Your Outlook Express account should now be configured to send messages using SMTP authentication


To enable SMTP authentication in Outlook XP/2003 and Outlook 2003, you should do the following:
  1. Open Outlook.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Email Accounts. The Email Accounts box appears.
  3. Verify that the circle-box View or change existing email accounts is selected and click Next.
  4. Your email account appears, usually labeled mail.greatmail.com.
  5. Click on your email account, usually labeled mail.greatmail.com, and click the Change button on the right. The Internet Email Settings appear.
  6. Click the button More Settings... in the lower right-hand corner. The Internet Email Settings box appears.
  7. Click the Outgoing Server tab.
  8. Click the circle-box My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication, and verify that the circle-box Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
  9. Click OK to close the Internet Email Settings box.
  10. Click the Finish button to close the Email Accounts box. SMTP authentication should now be enabled.

To configure SMTP authentication in Thunderbird, do the following:
  1. Open Thunderbird.
  2. Go to Tools/Account Settings.
  3. Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP).
  4. Check Use name and password. Your email address should appear in the
    field. If not, enter your email address.
  5. Click the OK button.
